The theme of National Crime Victims Rights Week (April 26-May 2, 2009) is "25 Years of Rebuilding Lives: Celebrating the Vcitims of Crime Act". Along with other victim service providers in Jefferson County, VOI will host the 15th Annual Courage Walk on May 2, 2009. The walk will begin at the steps of the Jefferson County Courts and Administration Building (no matter the weather!) and will conclude with a short ceremony at the Courage Garden. The one mile walk is wheelchair accessible. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Register and enjoy a Continental Breakfast at 10 am. The walk will begin at 11:00.
Proceeds from this event will be used for maintenance of the The Courage Garden which is dedicated to crime victims and designated for commemorative plantings. The Courage Garden is also a place of respite for those involved in court cases.
Donations are not a requirement for participation at this event!

The Annual Courage Walk is a time to honor the strength and courage of survivors. This is also a time to speak out in unison for crime victims' rights and services today and in the future. We are constantly amazed at the resiliency survivors of crime show as they fight to reclaim their lives and recover from criminal acts.
Eleanor Roosevelt spoke directly to these unsung heroes when she said, "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
The courage and determination we witness in survivors who "do the thing they think they cannot do", and then find a way to live life again, inspires this event.
This year, we also embrace the theme of April’s Child Abuse Prevention Month "Safe Children and Healthy Families are a Shared Responsibility". In 2003 an estimated 906,000 children in the United States were determined to be victims of child abuse or neglect.
Join us as we celebrate children and think about how to make their world safer - an endeavor that could result in a safer world for us all.
